Hey there,
My Macbook internal SSD failed recently (shown question marks and no entry signs, cannot boot up) and we are in lockdown so cant get it looked at.
In the meantime I have forked out for an external SSD to boot up the Mac but when trying to install via recovery mode / internet recovery mode I am met with 'you may not install to this volume because the computer is missing a firmware partition'. This happens for both Mojave normal recovery mode and Catalina via internet recovery mode.
Where is this firmware? I have correctly partitioned the external harddrive as GUID via the disk utilities in Recovery Mode. Its a 500gb Sandisk Extreme SSD plugged in via USB-C.
Its a 2016 macbook and I am at the end of my tether, please help. I have looked online but can't decode anything.
Thanks in advance

  1. This happened the second time I tried to install to an external USB drive on my MacBook 2015 with dead, undetectable internal flash. The first time, I think the internal flash was still detectable.
  2. The Mac was not able to upgrade to OS X El Capitan, MacOS Sierra, MacOS High Sierra, MacOS Mojave, or even MacOS Catalina, as it kept returning the error 'You may not install this volume because the computer is missing a firmware partition'.
  3. Back in the days before Mac OS X Lion launched in 2011 there wasn't a Recovery partition, instead you needed to have a physical disc with the software on it and an optical drive to insert it into.

Call of duty black ops mac. Does mac have a snipping tool. When you hit the power button your Mac loads a piece of firmware called the 'EFI ROM', this code does not live on your internal drive; it's on a special chip on the logic board. Mac pander me vs mocha.
